UPS status and settings are gone.

I'm not quite sure when it happened but I noticed yesterday during a power failure that the UPS status indicator in my menu bar is gone. The UPS settings in System Preferences>Energy Saver are also missing. Google search showed several articles suggesting resetting SMC so I tried that. No luck, still missing. System Information shows the UPS is connected via USB so I know my computer is seeing the UPS. Not sure what to try next?
OSX 10.9.3 Mavericks
MacPro Early 2008
Also tried zapping the PRAM.

I noticed today that this problem only occurs when I boot up in Mavericks. I have a partition with Snow Leopard that I use for a few games. When I boot into SL my UPS settings are there.
I have an APC BackUPS XS 1300 which has served me well for years. I dont really think the problem is with the UPS. Really looks like it's a Mavericks issue.
As stated originally, I have already tried an SMC reset and a PRAM reset. I'll try both again. Can't hurt anything.
